Major Rakal's Romulan Review #76
06/03/99 Aefvadh! The last personnel card I reviewed was T'Rul, and I ended it with the observation, "At this rate, I see an all-female Romulan deck not too far down the road..." I see there are still a couple of the green-bordered ladies from DS9 that I haven't yet reviewed, and I think I ought to do that before building that deck. Here's one of them who came in mighty handy for me in a recent tournament... SELVETH Romulan Personnel, unique, rare Integrity 6, Cunning 7, Strength 5, Staff star ENGINEER: Navigation x2, Stellar Cartography, Geology "Female Romulan. Piloted a warbird in the secret Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order operation to destroy Dominion homeworld in 2371. Served under Colonel Lovok." With the various dilemmas that take away personnel skills (Fightin' Words and Framed for Murder are only the most recent), and all the ons that require multiple ENGINEERs to pass or cure, it's good to see the ranks of Romulan ENGINEER-classification personnel increasing. Having another *female* ENGINEER is all the better. A close match to T'Rul in attributes and staff icon, Selveth has a very different, but just as useful, set of skills. Navigation has been in relatively short supply for Romulans, because there is no universal personnel with that skill. It wasn't a critical problem until DS9 brought us the Badlands region and Navigate Plasma Storms. Suddenly, lots of Navigation became of prime importance, and packing a double dose of it makes Selveth a valuable protection against that objective. Moreover, she gives you three quarters of the skills required to complete the "any crew" universal Study Badlands mission. Her Stellar Cartography is an important skill for almost any space-oriented Romulan deck, such as those based around Dr. Telek R'Mor. With her added skills, she's a better backup for that skill than Tarus (though as a mission specialist he's useful in his own right). On top of her space-useful skills, Selveth has one very planet-bound skill, Geology. Previously not terribly useful, Geology leapt into importance in DS9, both as a requirement for Changeling Research and as part of the conditions to get past Odo's Cousin and Seismic Quake. And what did Selveth do for me in that tournament? Why, she was the perfect pilot for a scout ship to pass Navigational Hazards and head off to the end of the spaceline for a 15-point Cytherians. The Major's Combos: - Selveth + Tarus + Assign Mission Specialists + Study Badlands x?: 30points each isn't bad for such a simple crew. - Selveth + Dr. Telek R'Mor + Study Lonka Pulsar: With two of those Study Badlands, you have 100 points.
