Re: Did you hear about this ruling? Major? Mot? What's your take? ... Major Rakal ... [7/14/99 19:02]
>Here's the sequence of play. Card play: Regenerate; execute orders: attempt/scout a space mission where your ship is already present, encounter Temporal Causality Loop as the first dilemma, which you can not pass. Note: there are no actions or other card plays between the time the Regenerate resolves and the initiation of the attempt/scout. This leaves a problem because you have to "undo" or "unresolve" you previous two actions, as per the Temporal Causality Loop text.

>Here was the ruling (as I understand it, it had to go to discussion at Decipher): since there is no way to "unresolve" the Regenerate, simply because you don't technically know what was in the discard pile, Regenerate would go back to the owner's hand, and the entire draw deck would be flipped over and would become the discard pile.

>I do not know that this is a consistent ruling. Usually, when a card comes into play and can not resolve, it's either discarded, with whatever various stipulations apply, or returned to hand and the game continues as if the card was not played, usually because the card was an invalid response to some other action. In this case, we have an action that can not "unresolve" or be "undone". While I can see Regenerate returning to the hand, I don't see how the draw deck becoming the discard pile would in any way aid in the process of "undoing" the Regenerate because of the fact that it has already been resolved. I can see how other actions, such as special downloads and the like, could easily be "undone"--just put them back and shuffle as appropriate--but with respect to Regenerate, I'm not sure I see how that works.

>Any opinions on this? Major, Mot, I'm pretty sure that you were both in on this discussion. Perhaps you can put a different spin on it for us.

We not only heard about it, Mot issued the ruling in consultation with me. It is under discussion in the rules committee at this time, as Mot indicated would happen in his ruling (he said, "Pending review by the Rules Committee...").

The rationale for the ruling is that Regenerate shuffles your discard pile into your draw deck, so undoing it would mean shuffling your draw deck into your discard pile. There is not totally satisfactory solution to undoing such an action, so we will have to make *some* ruling that is a compromise, no doubt. It does not seem fair to allow the player to simply get his Regenerate back for reuse, and make no effort to undo the replenishing of the draw deck.

At the moment, that is our tentative ruling. It may be put into effect officially, or it may be reversed by the rules committee. When we have a final ruling, it will be in the next CR (that is, the next one to be finalized after that time, not necessarily the July 26 issue which will be finalized on Friday).
