Keep your focus tight. Don't try to do to many different things. The old axim do one thing well instead of many things badly applies here. With Feds concentrate on Missions with a lot of common skills an classifications. Engineering and Diplomacy works well.
Try to come up with ways to speed up your deck. Additional card draws ways to download ships and personnel. Assign Mission Specialist work well with Feds. Feds have an AMS personnel for each of the basic skills.
Try to focus on a two mission win if possible. Feds have a really good set of personnel who have Music. A Ressiken Flute can be a nice way to do this as many of the best Feds have music. Picard, Data, Riker. Just watch out for some Medical as there are not a lot of Medical Music that fit well into a Fed deck although Calandra from RoA will help some here.
In your first few tournaments expect to lose. Tournament play is different from casual play. It can be rewarding and fun but we all take our lumps especially when first starting. Take mental notes on what your opponents do that work and what they do to stop, frustrate and slow you down. Being beaten does more to help your skill increase than winning will ever do.
Most importantly have fun and enjoy the experience. Many Experienced players will be happy to give you advice or expain their strategy to you. All you need to do is ask.
