Deck Configurations in the Introductory Two-Player Game

February 14 1997 -As some of our players have already noticed, there's a slight mismatch between the decks and the cardlist in our Star Trek: The Next Generation[TM] Customizable Card Game[TM] Introductory Two-Player Game. Specifically, the dilemmas in the Klingon deck appear on the Federation card list, and vice versa.

For those who are interested, we recommend following the printed card lists as the "official" deck designs for the two-player game. However, the game is playable with the decks in either configuration. The distinction was not considered of great importance by the designers, because one of the ideas behind the concept of the two-player game was that players would use the decks as packaged for a couple of games, then start customizing those decks. If you are a new player and would like to experiment with deck customization a little bit at a time, we suggest the following:

  1. Assemble the decks according to the printed card lists. (If playing for the first time, simply switch all of the dilemmas between the two decks.) Play a few games using these decks, so you can become familiar with the quick-start rules and develop a good "feel" for how the game plays.

  2. Then, mix the cards up a little. Exchange dilemmas, interrupts and events back and forth between the Federation and Klingon decks in any combination, and see how that plays. (Be sure you keep 60 cards in each deck.)

  3. Next, switch in some of the premium cards and cards from the expansion packs. Experiment to see how your new deck designs work. (Be sure to check out the Alternate Universe[TM] rules supplement on this web site if you have questions about any of the cards in your AU expansion pack.) This would also be a good time to give yourself a "field promotion" from the quick-start rules to the comprehensive rules.

  4. Now you are ready to use any of the cards from the larger card universe for endless deck construction possibilities. Romulan decks, all-android Away Teams, colonies, time travel, mischief from the Q-Continuum -- all of these things and more await you as you collect more cards and Expand Your Power In The Universe[TM]!
