Qume: Small correction and timing notes (txt) ... Major Rakal ... [2/25/99 20:55]

1) You play PA.

basically decides whether to let you score 5 points or play an event for free.

3) That's it.

If your opponent disagrees with you, you do not *have* to play PA for an event play. So (2) should say that you opponent decides whether to let you score 5 points, OR to choose between doing nothing or playing an event. But in any case, the "cool" determination really does enter into how to play the card. It's a question of properly initiating the card play.

Here is how the timing of a PA play action works.

1. Initiation. Choose a function for a multi-use card, check conditions, choose targets, pay costs. There are no targets or costs associated with PA; the only things you have to worry about are the function and the conditions, and in this case there is a different set of conditions for playing it for the two functions (ignoring the nullifying function). If I want to choose the first function, it has the condition that the last game action must have been "cool", in the opinion of both players. If I don't think it was cool, the initiation of the play fails. If *you* don't think it was cool, the initiation of the play fails. In either case, I don't meet the conditions for playing function one, and the card goes back to my hand--it is illegal to play it right now. If we both agree it was cool, I go to step 2...

2. Optional responses. You may play Amanda Rogers or another PA to nullify my PA. If you don't respond, I go to step 3...

3. Results. I score 5 points and place the PA in my bonus area.

Note that the second function did not appear in that timing analysis. That's because the second function is a completely separate action, which has nothing to do with the first one (and does not have to occur at all), except that the first attempted play is the only way to set up the conditions for the use of the second function.

1. Initiation. Choose the second function. Check conditions--did we just argue (about the coolness of the previous action--that is the only argument that is allowed under the Glossary ruling)? Yes, if you did not agree that the action was cool, we argued, by the definition in the rules. The initiation succeeds.

2. Optional responses. Again, you may respond with a nullifier. Assuming you don't...

3. Results. I play an Event card (resolving that action completely). Then, I score 0 points and place PA in my bonus area.
