Klingon Bio-Med Green Planet Deck

by: Cheryl, aka Tallera

Considering the fact that the Klingons in Star Trek have always been a less-than-scientific bunch, it surprises me that it is so easy to build a good Klingon deck based around Biology, MEDICAL and Anthropology personnel. But this one has done fairly well for me in various tournaments, and has only gotten better with the addition of cards from The Dominion! Incidentally, it's also known as "The Green Planet Deck"... :)

SEED PHASE
Missions are fairly straightforward. Dilemma combos are, of course, player's discretion, but these are the combos I use with this deck. The last one is in case your opponent plays Empok Nor, but if they don't, you can combine the Fire and Issues with one of the other combos. I especially like the combo beginning with the Armus-Skin of Evil, since it's a real OFFICER-weeder (it takes 4 OFFICERS to get through unscathed, assuming you don't lose one to Armus), which can be tough on most opponents, but is pretty easy for this deck to get through, if you want to attempt an opponent's planet mission.

A couple of the other combos are just because I think they're neat (i.e., the Chula combo), and in case of Q's Planet (or if you want to replace a seed card with a Hide and Seek), there are two dilemmas in the Tent, Edo Probe and Dead End. The Great Hall and the HQ: Secure Homeworld obviously go at Expose Covert Supply, and I recommend putting the Outpost at Investigate Alien Probe. In all the games I've played with this deck, that mission was always the first I was able to solve, and it usually meant 40 quick points with a minimum of problems. And if your opponent is playing with a Nor of any kind, figuring out where it will be seeded and placing the Sheliak combo there can be MUCH fun later....

PLAY PHASE
This deck is a bit personnel-heavy, with lots of redundant skills, to make it easy to get personnel to solve missions early on. The Red Alert! in the Tent can be helpful, especially after taking a shipful of soon-to-be-catfood personnel back to your hand with a Space-Time Portal. Plopping the entire pile back down on the table on your next turn is SO satisfying (be sure to keep a close eye on your opponent's face during this maneuver). :) Be sure to keep your eyes open for personnel who can report for free at The Great Hall, as there are several included (another way to make the opponent grumble).

Also, to help with cycling through the draw deck quickly, there are a couple of Collectors in the draw deck, and a Traveler: Transcendence in the Tent. Mirror Imaging your opponent's Collectors is also fun. A couple of the ships are universal (the K'Vorts), and can therefore be downloaded with the Spacedoor, to get you up and running quickly. The rest all have matching commanders who can be downloaded to them with Ready Room Doors. The Captain's Log and Defiant Plaque in the Tent can also be downloaded with the Doors, and should soup up your little armada quite nicely. Add Martok to the mix, and you could conceivably take on a Borg Cube.

And speaking of Borg, have I mentioned how absolutely cool Kitrik is? With MEDICAL and Cybernetics all in one, Kitrik prevents your Away Teams from being assimilated by Borg Servos! While I know that many people turn their noses up at "old" cards like counters (Amanda Rogers, Q2, etc.) and scans, I have often won games solely because I could keep my opponent from playing that one nasty Temporal Rift on me, or kept my Away Teams in one piece by preparing for the dilemmas under an important mission. Of course, the more fanatical among you are welcome to remove them anyway.

Along the same lines, many of the cards in the Tent are often thought "useless," but they're all there because they have saved my butt at one point or another (i.e. Temporal Vortex, Hugh, Jamaharon). The first two are invaluable against those unexpected Borg Ship dilemmas, and the third, Jamaharon, is perfect for shutting down an opponent's Horgh'an strategy. Of course, you could use The Devil for that, but then what will you do about that treaty over there? Aside from these little details, this is basically a fast mission-solving deck, with the potential to become a nasty armada if necessary. :)

CONCLUSION
Basically, just have fun with this deck. Try it out, tweak it, rearrange it, completely redesign it, whatever floats your boat. :)

With Martok and company from The Dominion, and hopefully some really neat personnel in Blaze of Glory, the Klingons are no longer the underdog expansion that no one ever plays. They're getting their bite back, even when they're in a scientific mood. So go out and hunt something. A Borg Scout Vessel, an Alien Probe, or a nasty virus. Take your pick. :)
