Hi,
I *think* Sean might have unleashed the dogs of hell, namely: talk about the
WC Soccer.
It's a good think America lost, otherwise we would have to see 2 hours of
useless flag-waving when they won the WC. :D
This is coming from a guy who lives in Holland, and as you all know, the
Dutch National Soccer team didn't qualify. So, don't think it's serious
comment. I bow my head in shame for the mighty Americans :) (although they
should have kept Lalas in the National Team)
Best,
Tristan.
P.S.
This isn't one of my usual, very obvious ways to unleash a fight between the
ambassadors. Really, it isn't ;)
>Ach du lieber! Germany wins, 1-0 over the underdogs, my beloved USA team!
>
>Well, we had some great shots, which is unusual for Germany to allow to
>happen, and we kept them only to one. I think the USA team deserves some
>respect for a solid performance, far outpacing the expectations of the
>football world.

Have you forgotten, We are at War?, Yes many people
have because they don't see the fighting in the
streets, but we ARE at war.
Over the years I was not one who was overbearing when
it came to honoring our flag, BUT since 9-11 I have
and will fly my flags. I do this to honor the ones
that have fallen, to show we will not be scared into
hiding, and mostly because my son is in the Army
defending our country and its flag.
Now I have not been one that gets into the stuff I
have seen on here BUT, I CAN AND WILL NOT STAND FOR
ANYONE SLANDERING MY COUNTRY OR IT'S FLAG THAT MY SON
IS WILLING TO FIGHT AND DIE FOR IN MY PRESENCE!
No exceptions, No apologies

Jeez
.... This is exactly why some Europeans think we're overbearing slobs....
Yes we are at war. Yes we need to hunt down the unspeakable s.o.b.'s that
attacked us last year. I don't think anyone on this list would argue
against that. I also don't think anyone is against our
"flag-waiving" when appropriate. For example, when our many
allies flew OUR flag alongside theirs right after 9/11.
But for cryin' out loud - RELAX!!! This is a sporting event we're talking
about here - and the "flag waiving" that was brought up was because,
quite frankly, our sports media loves to overcover and dote on events where the
US wins. Yes, our mens soccer team deserves all the accolades they can gather
for their best performance in 70+ years. But had we won, I have no doubt, like
Tristan said, we'd have seen it done and over done for the better part of a
week.
To call a fellow ambassador's comment's "slander" in the context of
sports is way off-base.
And, for the record - I spent 13 years on active duty in the military
"willing to fight and die" for my country as well.

This conversation is over. Whether you feel one way or another, do not
post. There is a big difference between friendly banter over the WC, and a
philosophical disagreement over a passionate subject. So, end it. It
does
not belong on this list.

Sean,
Good call - thanks pulling the plug on this thread. It was about to get
real ugly....
