Our TMP Prerelease Tournament was held on Saturday, 13 April at the Hard Drive Gaming Center here in San Angelo.

We wound up with 13 total players from San Antonio, Austin, and of course, San Angelo.  No out-of-state attendees unfortunately, and just as unfortunately we didn't get any of our regular players from Abilene due to scheduling conflicts.

The Good:  Overall the players were very happy with the expansion - the cards themselves were beautiful, and folks seemed genuinely happy with the the new mechanics.

The Bad:  The only major gripe with the format that came up was Dilemmas.  Three players had few dilemmas - in fact one, Kurt Hoffmaster, only got four total - while others either got quite a few, or managed to get one or more powerful dilemmas (see below).   There was some "Trek Sense" grumbling that V'Ger from the first movie was boiled down in game mechanics to a single dilemma, but detractors of the movie felt Decipher was being generous to include ANY cards from ST:TMP in this expansion.

Highlights:  Geoff Midler from Austin (da bum!) got the UR James T. Kirk.   Jason Markulin managed to get solve the Collect Particles Objective for the Son'a.  And Coleen Mikuls managed to play the Genesis Device on a planet mission - to zero-out it's points before Mark Satchell was able to score winning points, Mark later won at another mission.  Grant Woodring, our resident Borg Player, got several Rogue Borg Mercenaries (how fitting) in his SDII and made life difficult for his opponents.  "Meataxe" Mike Harrison got an IKC Kla'Dius out in play (again, how fitting).  Shawn Murray pulled a Static Warp Bubble that he managed to get into play by Turn 3 in all his games.  Also, there was a Borg Ship Dilemma and Barclay's Protomorphesis Disease that showed up on the spaceline and smacked several players around a bit.  Unfortunately, no Khan or Reliant - and no Sybok either.  We were also surprised when KLST, one of our local TV stations, showed up with a crew and did a short spot on us for their evening newscast.

Results:

Louie Garcia from San Antonio won the tournament and snagged the Dukat of Borg T-Shirt.  Final scores after four rounds were:

Louie Garcia     8 (255)
Grant Woodring     6 (150)
Geoff Midler     6 (145)
Mike Harrison     6 (-15)
Shawn Murray     5 (70)
Jerry Jackson     4 (125)
Larry Lettelier     4 (-25)
Jason Markulin     4 (-125)
Greg Claudy     3 (-50)
Mark Satchell     2 (-40)
Kurt Hoffmaster     2 (-175)
Gabe Garcia     2 (-190)
Coleen Mikuls     1 (-125)

Overall, the tournament itself was a great success - and most of the players gathered afterwards at our favorite Tex-mex haunt - Mejor Que Nada - for brag-n-gripe session.

Special thanks go out to Ryan Manelick, Hard Drive's Gaming Manager for all his hard work in setting up the store just for this event - and of course to Decipher for choosing us to host the pre-release.
