Ambassador Report - December 2002
Region: Ronara - West Texas
Ambassador: Matt Clouser
1. THE STATE OF GAMING IN MY AREA:
Retailer Scene: Unfortunately, no change to report here. There are NO stores in my area that support Decipher products and activities. I finally managed to get ahold of one of the local gamers looking into opening a game store. Looks like it will be in the next three months, and it will start out very small. No games will be stocked, but they will do special orders. They will probably only have a small game area. Not the best of news, but it's what we've got... I'll continue to track this development.
I got some more bad news this weekend - while Hard Drive (our old game store) has been closed since 1 September - I had some hopes of being able to make some arrangements to get my hands on their old 1E merchandise at low prices. One of the previous owners finally returned to town - and I found out that all his stock had been sent to Florida as part of the liquidation settlement. Crap....
CCG Scene: Again, CCG's are virtually dead in the area - Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic are played in small pickup games - primarily at Specialties, our local toy store.
Texas STCCG Scene: Was very pleased to hear that Ray Cox will be taking over STCCG in Dallas - now I don't feel so lonely here in Texas!
2. WHAT I'VE DONE "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME" ....
I sound like a broken record - but to be honest, this has been another disappointing month for STCCG. NO ONE showed for my demo on December 8th at Hastings. This was my fourth consecutive demo with no attendance - there is just that little interest in the game. The management at Hastings will not be ordering any product - and truth be told, it's hard to blame them.
My attempt at a Nemesis theater outing was a disaster - the local management at our Cinemark theater was not thrilled about the idea, and to add insult to injury I had to cancel - a crisis at work cropped up (a RAID set on one of our servers crashed and burned) and I spent most of Saturday at work rebuilding and restoring. Anyone need a Jupiter or Data Laughing ??
Tournaments: None - No tournaments held this month - no venue currently available.
Tournament Directors: Three santioned TD's - Jerry Jackson, Grant Woodring and myself.
Demos: One (see coments above)
3. PROMOTIONAL PLANS FOR NEXT MONTH.
I am banging my head against a wall at Hastings - the management has been cooperative with my Sunday demos, but really don't take STCCG seriously because of the poor attendance. No other venue is available for demos.
I'm in a real nasty position here - I have already spent $100 of my own money for 2E product, and there are no ambassador boxes in sight. Since I have had no new players interested in the game, and only one or two old timers still playing informally - Trek is looking like a lost cause despite my efforts. I have a slim thread of hope in the next month or so with the possibility of a new store.
4. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES: Demos (If Hastings will allow it ...)
