Ambassador Report - June 2002
Region: Ronara - West Texas
Ambassador: Matt Clouser

1.  THE STATE OF GAMING IN MY AREA:

Retailer Scene: Yet another stupid thing I gotta deal with ...  Our main retailer, Hard Drive Gaming Center, has cut back their operating hours.  They are now open only Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00 pm through 6:00 pm.  Jerry Jackson (local LOTR Rider) and I had to make special arrangements to keep the store open late for our Territorial Opens.  Tom, the gaming manager, appreciates our position and tries to work with us as best he can, but as I mentioned last month, he does not have the same "pull" with the owners that the previous manager did.

CCG Scene:

Overall a good month for the major CCG's in our are.

STCCG: Had another excellent month with Star Trek, topped off with our hosting the West Texas Territorial Open Championship on Saturday, June 15th.  I held several deck training sessions in the weeks leading up to the TOC, and was happy to see 12 players show for the tournament.  The gameplay was some of the best seen in our area for a while, with most of our local players on top of their game.  The TOC winner was Chris Heard from Johnson City, Tennessee, and second place went to Neil Weddell of San Angelo.

While most of our efforts were on TOC preparations, we kept an eye on the development of the new Trek TCG with a mixture of dread and anticipation.  Local reaction so far is lukewarm at best.

LOTR: Interest in LOTR remains high, which showed during the LOTR West Texas Territorial Open Championship held on Saturday, June 8th.  I assisted Jerry Jackson, the local LOTR PC in running the TOC.

SW/YD: Dead.

Jedi Knights - The local resurgance of interest in Jedi Knights has waned a bit - I've only seen a couple of games played this month.

Magic: Magic is still popular here, with small (6-8 player) theme tournaments being played most weekends.

Pokemon: Since I've seen no activity in the ugly little monster game over the last quarter, this will be my last entry for it.

2. WHAT I'VE DONE "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME" ....

Tournaments: I made it to the East Texas STCCG TOC in Houston on the Sunday, June 2nd (over 800 miles on the car over 2 days!) - placed 4th overall.  The West Texas TOC I hosted was a great success in my opinion - I've spent the last 6-8 weekends in some level of preparation for this event and the one for LOTR.  I'll be backing off on STCCG over the next couple of weeks to focus on family and vacation.

Tournaments: West Texas TOC on 15 June, already mentioned above.

Tournament Directors: Three santioned TD's - Jerry Jackson, Grant Woodring and myself.

Demos: Made no time for demos this month.  Looking to get back into the swing of things in July/August.

3. PROMOTIONAL PLANS FOR NEXT MONTH.

I'll be backing off on STCCG over the next couple of weeks to focus on family and vacation.  Grant Woodring is planning on hosting a constructed deck tournament later this month, so I get to play - woohoo!!!!

4.  UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

June 27th - Constructed Deck Tournament hosted by Grant Woodring
