Ambassador Report - May 2002
Region: Ronara - West Texas
Ambassador: Matt Clouser
1. THE STATE OF GAMING IN MY AREA:
Retailer Scene: We have a new gaming manager, "Tom" at our main retailer here in San Angelo. Fortunately, he's a decent guy to work with. Unfortunately, he does not have the same "pull" with the owners that the previous manager did - and I have had to go directly to the "suits" to resolve problems that I've had. Nothing major, just another extra hassle to deal with...
CCG Scene:
Overall a good month for the major CCG's in our are.
STCCG: Had another excellent month with Star Trek - interest remains high with my local players after the TMP Pre-release on April 13th. We've managed to pull back several players back into the game as a direct result of this expansion.
TMP Expansion continues to sell well - we've gone through about 2 display boxes since last month, and interest in the expansion remains high.
We continue to watch the development of the New Trek TCG with a mixture of dread and anticipation. Most of our recent efforts are going into getting our decks ready for the Open Tournaments in June and we won't get a chance to really shake out the new game until after the Opens. Most of the first impressions are not that favorable.
LOTR: Interest in LOTR remains high, and is the dominant game locally. The Mines of Moria expansion is selling very well.
SW/YD: Dead.
Jedi Knights - a curious rebirth of Jedi Knights occurred when Hard Drive discounted their JK Decks/pack inventory (75% off) last week. At least 6 people are playing the game right now. Go figure...
Magic: Magic is still popular here - probably second after LOTR and just ahead of Trek.
Pokemon: No activity noted again this month.
2. WHAT I'VE DONE "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME" ....
Tournaments: Grant Woodring got sanctioned as a TD when ran a constructed deck tournament on May 18th. He managed to get a good turnout with 12 players attending including five out-of towners (2 from Abilene, 2 from Austin, 1 from San Antonio).
Made the 800 mile round trip to the East Texas Territorial Open in Houston this weekend - great tournament, but WAY too much road-work!!
Tournament Directors: Now up to three again - Jerry Jackson, Grant Woodring and myself.
Demos: I ran several Warp Speed demos on request during my "Open Play" sessions this month. No serious bites - just polite interest (drat...).
3. PROMOTIONAL PLANS FOR NEXT MONTH.
I will be hosting the West Texas Open Championships here in San Angelo on June 15th - most of my effort since the pre-release has been spent in helping my local players get their decks spun-up for the Open.
4. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
June 15th - West Texas Open Championship at Hard Drive.
5. LOCAL RETAILERS/VENUES:
