Ambassador Report - April 2002
Region: Ronara - West Texas
Ambassador: Matt Clouser
1. THE STATE OF GAMING IN MY AREA:
Retailer Scene: I just found out that the gaming manager of our main retailer here in San Angelo will be leaving the store - dunno if he quit or was fired, but apparently it's not a friendly departure. Since I have an Open Championship scheduled for June 15th, I will be working very closely with the new manager once he/she is named.
CCG Scene:
Overall a good month for the major CCG's in our are.
STCCG: Had an excellent month with Star Trek. The TMP Pre-Release we held on April 13th was a great success, and we had five players drive out from San Antonio for the tournament. I got a chance to meet Greg Caudy, the TD for San Antonio, who is responsible for a resurgence in STCCG's popularity in North San Antonio.
TMP Expansion is selling very well - we've been through about 5 display boxes already, and interest in the expansion remains high. I've managed to pull about 3-4 players back into the game as a direct result of this expansion.
The recent announcement of the possible new Trek game has met with reactions ranging from curious interest to ominous dread. We'll just have to see what happens...
LOTR: Interest in LOTR remains high, and is the dominant game locally. The Mines of Moria expansion is selling very well, and their most recent tournament in early April was well attended.
SW/JK/YD: Dead.
Magic: Magic continues to enjoy a resurgance in popularity locally - there are a couple of new players coming in and playing regularly.
Pokemon: No activity noted this month - mayhaps the monsters are well and truly dead?!?!?.
2. WHAT I'VE DONE "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME" ....
Tournaments: As mentioned above, ran a TMP Pre-Release Sealed Deck tournament on April 13th. I also ran several "Sealed Deck" training games in the week leading to the tournament to help refresh some of the players on the format.
Tournament Directors: Currently two: myself, and Jerry Jackson. A third TD, Grant Woodring, will be running a Constructed-Deck tournament on 18 May.
Demo: I ran a Warp Speed demo on request for one of the local Magic players who expressed interest in the game.
3. PROMOTIONAL PLANS FOR NEXT MONTH.
No new contacts planned this month - most of my spare time in April was spent preparing for the TMP Pre-Release, and I will be focusing my efforts over the next several weeks "working" the new game store manager at Hard Drive.
4. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
Grant Woodring should become our next sanctioned TD after his Constructed Deck Tournament on May 18th. I will be working with many of the local players to get their decks spun-up for the Open Championship I'll be hosting on June 15th.
5. LOCAL RETAILERS/VENUES:
