Ambassador Report - April 2001
Region: Ronara - West Texas
Ambassador: Matt Clouser
Section 1: The general scene for CCG's, and for Star Trek CCG in particular
in your area. (What trends are you seeing? Any strange rumors/news?)
Magic still has the most active player base here in San Angelo - Pokemon
continues it's slow slide into obscurity. Dragonball-Z seems to have picked
up a little bit. From out of the blue, a local B5CCG Ranger has appeared, so
interest in this game may pick up. Several of the sports CCGs and the WWF
CCG have occasional players - and I even saw a Survivor CCG game played last
week.
Unfortunately for SW, the player who was going to take on TD duties has not
been able to devote the time to the game, so SW and YJ are essentially dead
right now. I asked a friend of mine who is a SWCCG collector if he would be
interested in taking on TD duties, but he has little interest in playing the
game.
STCCG has had a slow month, but many of my local high-school players have had
to focus on school and sports activities. Late April through May is a
traditionally tough time to get much more than a monthly tournament going.
However, my post-college aged gamers (25-30) and out of town college players
(Abilene and Austin) are still active.
Section 2: What have you been up to as an Ambassador during the past month
(demos, tournaments, new retailer contacts, new TD mentorships, etc...) How
well did you meet your plans made for this month?
I managed to get five players from my "stable" to the Texas State STCCG on 31
March.
Myself and Jerry Jackson (2nd from last years State) went, as well as two
players from Abilene (Dan and Matt Hurley) and one from Austin (Geoff
Midler). Out of a field of 14 players, we made a strong showing, placing
3rd, 5th, 6th 7th and 9th.
Only two new items to report - several players asked for me to hold a
pre-tournament "deck clinic", which I ran yesterday. Had three players show,
unfortunately, the two highschoolers that requested the clinic had to leave
town unexpectedly.
I made a promising contact at at the local Air Base with one of the training
students. I have been looking for an "in" there for a while. Time will
tell .....
Section 3: What are your plans for the upcoming month, as far as promotions
for Star Trek CCG go?
Our next tournament is scheduled for May 5th (next weekend) - a sanctioned
constructed deck format. Mike Harrison, one of my newer TD's want's to run
the first constructed format with the new Voyager cards. Since we are
looking to have a Voyager "special event" on the Voyager release date - I'll
probably host that event and Mike will then run his tournament in June. Our
third TD, Jerry Jackson, has been on the road alot with work, but should be
able to get back into the swing of things next month.
